Gold-Plated, Gold-Filled, Solid Gold... What Does it All Mean??

I'll admit, before I started my jewelry business I was confused about the difference between gold-filled and solid gold... they mean the same thing, no?! I've since done my research to understand, and am happy to share what I've learned:

Gold-Plated
Pieces that are labeled as "gold-plated" are simply a thin layer of gold coated over a base metal, typically brass or steel. The outer gold layer makes up about 1% of the weight, meaning that it's a very small amount. This is the most affordable option for jewelry if you like the look of gold. However, you'll need to take extra care to ensure the longevity of your jewelry piece. Moisture can wear down the outer gold layer, revealing the base metal within a short time if not properly cared for. Check out my blog post on the best ways to care for your gold-plated pieces! Most all of my jewelry comes standard with gold-plated findings due to its affordability and nice appearance.

Gold-Filled
The name can be misleading. It's not actually filled with gold. Rather, there is a thicker outer layer of gold on top of a base metal, such as brass or sterling silver (specifically called vermeil). The gold layer makes up about 5% of the weight. Gold-filled jewelry is the best option in terms of affordability and quality. Since the outer gold layer is thicker than a gold-plated layer, it will last longer against wear. This makes it a great choice for those looking for hypoallergenic pieces. I offer gold-filled findings as an upgrade for my earrings at a small price. Find 'Upgrades' under the 'Shop' section to take a look!

Solid Gold
It's gold through and through, baby. Made of 100% gold (if you choose 24-karat, of course). This is the most durable jewelry option, although it comes with a hefty price tag.
