How to Care For Gold-Plated Jewelry

Pieces that are labeled as "gold-plated" are simply a thin layer of gold coated over a base metal, typically brass or steel. The outer gold layer makes up about 1% of the weight, meaning that it's a very small amount. This is the most affordable option for jewelry if you like the look of gold. However, you'll need to take extra care to ensure the longevity of your jewelry piece. Moisture can wear down the outer gold layer, revealing the base metal within a short time if not properly cared for.

Most all of my jewelry comes standard with gold-plated findings due to its affordability and nice appearance. You always have the option to upgrade to gold-filled via the 'Shop' and 'Upgrades' section on my site if you're looking for pieces to last you many, many years. You can read more about the differences between gold-plated, gold-filled, and solid gold in a previous blog post. But if you'd like to stick with the affordable gold-plated pieces, here are a few things you can do to keep them in tip-top shape!

Store to Save
My number one tip is to store your gold-plated jewelry in cloth-lined box or cloth bag, away from moisture and light. This will help to ensure the environment won't get to your jewelry when you're not wearing it. Because the gold layer is quite thin, tarnishing can happen. This is especially true when exposed to humid environments.

Keep 'em Clean
After each wear, I recommend cleaning your gold-plated jewelry with a clean, dry cloth. This will help to remove any moisture and debris that might expedite tarnishing. I don't recommend cleaning your gold-plated jewelry with wet solutions or chemicals. This may aide in removing the thin gold layer when you're trying to preserve it. A cloth is your best friend!

Wear For the Occasion
Feel like going for a swim? I would advise against wearing your gold-plated pieces in or around water (or any wet solutions for that matter). Take them off before you hit the pool, shower, or take a romantic stroll in the rain. Now wearing them on a night on the town with your friends, or a hot date? Absolutely!
